HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

Cats found in a Hartford home with a dead man Friday are in need of a home, according to animal control officers.

Animal control said about 100 cats lived in the house on Bannister Street. Many were strays.

Now officials are looking for homes for about 30 of them.

The victim's brother Domenic Arena said Monday he was shocked to learn that police found Tony Arena dead.

He also said his brother had just gotten back from rehab that same day and that the cause of his death appears to be an overdose.

"I didn't think he was into that," Arena said. "If he went through that rehab program, what did the rehab do for him?"

Domenic Arena said he was helping officers remove the felines from the building to avoid losing the home.

Neighbors said they were troubled by the smell.

"It smells horrible in the summertime," said Miguel Velez, a neighbor. "It comes through the whole entire neighborhood when they open that door."

The animals were taken to a number of animal shelters across the region, according to officers.

The following agencies are providing assistance in sheltering and placing the cats in new, permanent homes:

  • Whiskers Animal Shelter, 342 Lathrop Rd., Plainfield 860-564-7138
  • Protectors of Animals, 144 Main St., East Hartford 860-569-0722
  • Our Companions, 46 Floeting Rd., Ashford 860-477-0988
