(Hawaii News Now) - Karen T. Nakamura, CEO of The Building Industry Association of Hawaii (BIA), has announced plans to retire in late 2014. Karen's BIA involvement began with membership in 1968 and over the years, she received several recognitions. As the President/ CEO of Wallpaper Hawaii, Ltd., she was the BIA Remodeler of the Year and National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Remodeler of the Year in 1985. Karen officially joined BIA as the CEO in 1998 and faced the economic challenges of a 40% statewide loss of the construction labor force and licensed contractors. Through her leadership, the BIA has not only survived but actually thrived, and her efforts led to the completion of The Robert H. Armstrong Construction Training Center of the Pacific (CTC). Completed in 2009, the CTC is the result of the support of member companies, industry partners, Federal and State grants. BIA pre-apprentice construction training, designation and certification training conducted at the CTC provides continuing industry education. The BIA Search Committee Chair is Immediate Past President Greg Thielen and the deadline for resume submissions is March 31, 2014. Qualified candidates shall have comparable experience in Association management and experience in the building or land use industry is preferred. Strong candidates will have experience in dealing with advocacy issues and in understanding the evolving concepts of membership organizations.
