HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Hawaii state website has already allowed users to find registered sex offenders in their neighborhoods. Those features are now available using an app, making the information, mobile.
"Suppose you are buying a home," says State Attorney General David Louie, "(you can) get real-time information on sex offenders in your area."
Louie's office launched the Hawaii sex offender app Wednesday. It allows you to find the registered offenders not just using an address, but also using GPS.
Tricia Jacobs, a Mililani mother of two, feels safe in her own neighborhood, but plans to use the app when she takes her kids outside her comfort zone.
"I think it's awesome, because, when you go to the parks and any neighborhood, you want to know what you're getting into," says Jacobs.
The website provides the offender's name, picture, address, and vehicle information, in addition to details on the crime the person was convicted of and the year of conviction.
"More information is good," says Louie, who says parents will be able to make better decisions because of the app.
"Criminals have rights too," says Louie, "They've done their time, they're now living in the community, that doesn't mean that they're dangerous, it's just a level of information."
Tricia Jacobs says the information might not make her avoid a neighborhood altogether, but will make her more aware of areas to avoid in that neighborhood.
