Thieves on Kauai struck a new dog park, only weeks before its grand opening.
Volunteer Donna Pickard put up a sign asking "WHY?" after someone stole two six-foot high metal gates from the Wailua Homesteads Dog Park. It happened sometime between Sunday night and early Monday morning, she says.
A group of volunteers spent three and a half years raising cash and seeking donations to make the dog park a reality. The goal was to open the park by the end of the month, but now they say there is no money to have the new fences rebuilt.
"I was very sad personally," said Pickard. "I just thought 'Why? Why would someone do this?' It's a pointless thing to do."
Pickard says the thieves used tools to remove the gates and does not believe it is the work of vandals. Two smaller gates were left untouched.
