National weather causing delays and cancellations at Bradley

Airline officials said it could be days before flights are back on track at Bradley International Airport after thousands have been canceled or delayed across the country because of messy weather in the Midwest.

Throughout the day, there were 39 departure cancellations, 27 arrival cancellations and sporadic delays at Bradley International Airport.

"This is just crazy," John Cassella said. "It's not what I expected on my first day of vacation."

Departure boards at Bradley in Windsor Locks were mostly red after dozens of flights to destinations across the United States were canceled.

"We're tired and hungry," said Eileen Rudich, of Florida. "My mother-in-law is actually very ill. She's in a hospital down there. I don't know if we're going to make it."

Some passengers trying to get home were stuck at the airport overnight.

"We got on the plane and they canceled," Rudich said. "We're sitting here because the roads are too icy and we can't get back to Prospect."

The delays and cancellations are part of a ripple effect caused by frigid temperatures across the country. In Chicago, the sub-zero temperatures, wind chills, snow and ice canceled about half of all flights there. At JFK in New York City, a slippery runway caused a plane to skid off the runway on Sunday.

The plane was towed back to the gate with everyone on board.

Announcements at the airport are telling passengers that it could be a while before they can get a flight out, and if they don't feel like waiting in line they can go home and re-book over the phone.

To avoid delays, airport officials said it's best to call your airline before heading to the airport.
