Local Connection: Pro Bowl Week

By: Rick Blangiardi

This year's Pro Bowl week will include six youth football clinics, a football safety workshop, a tree planting event, visits by players to children's hospitals and our military bases, and free events that give the people of Hawaii a chance to experience the excitement of the NFL.

Once again, the NFL will be making over $100,000 in grants to local charities, and provide fundraising opportunities for other local non-profits.

The NFL is working with many local schools, the YMCA, the boys and girls club, the Salvation Army and the Honolulu parks and recreation department to promote their "play 60 program", which encourages young people to stay active and live a healthy lifestyle.

This year's pro bowl teams will be selected at a new pro bowl draft television show that will showcase the beauty of Hawaii to millions of fans on the mainland.  The 2014 pro bowl will feature a new format with alumni captains, Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders, unexpected match-ups, and teammates vs teammates, or as they say -- this year's pro bowl will be "unconferenced".

The best way for us to show our support for the pro bowl is to show our spirit at the Aloha Stadium on Sunday, January 26.

Hawaii News Now is proud to be a sponsor for pro bowl week, working with the NFL to bring youth activities and public events to Hawaii.
