HONOLULU (AP) - Hawaiian Electric Co. is offering residents some safety tips to follow when setting off fireworks on New Year's Eve.
The utility said Monday people should set up and use fireworks in areas clear of overhead power lines.
The company says don't string fireworks on utility poles.
HECO recommends staying 10 feet away from power lines when using ladders or other tools to string fireworks.
Finally, Hawaiian Electric says don't try to free tangled objects from power lines. Instead, people should call Hawaiian Electric's trouble line, toll free, at 1-855-304-1212.
Firecrackers now on sale; all other fireworks illegal
