Hawaii flags to fly at half-staff for Jean King

HONOLULU (AP) - Hawaii state flags will fly at half-staff this weekend in memory of the first woman elected lieutenant governor of the state.

Gov. Neil Abercrombie is ordering that state flags fly at half-staff on Saturday in honor of former Lt. Gov. Jean Sadako King.

King served in the state House of Representatives from 1972 to 1974 and in the state Senate from 1974 to 1978. She was elected to serve as Hawaii's first female lieutenant governor from 1978 to 1982.

Abercrombie said in a proclamation King worked throughout her life in support of the homeless, environment and peace.

King died last month at the age of 87.

Her memorial services are being held on Saturday.
