Vandals blamed for widespread Oahu traffic camera outage

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Thieves knocked out dozens of Oahu traffic cameras on Christmas Day.

According to City officials, the suspects most likely used a saw to cut through a PVC pipe and iron pipe under the Middle Street overpass. The fiber optic cables in that location were severed, apparently mistaken for copper wiring.

The damage occurred sometime around 2 a.m. early Christmas day. A total of 35 traffic cameras spanning from Kaneohe to Ewa Beach are now offline. Officials expect repairs to take about 30 days and cost roughly $15,000.

No arrests have been made.
