Rainbow Warriors finish 5th at Diamond Head Classic

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai'i men's basketball treated its fans to a Christmas gift with a 79-73 win over Oregon State on the final day of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center. In its first game versus a Pac-12 squad since 2006, the Rainbow Warriors built a large second-half lead before holding off a late Beaver rally.

UH improved to 9-3 overall with its seventh win its last eight games, while finishing 2-1 in the prestigious tournament for the third time in the last four years.

Four of UH's five starters finished in double-digit scoring, including the first career double-double by senior Brandon Spearman (14 points, 10 rebounds). Meanwhile,  Keith Shamburger directed the UH offense with a season-high 10 assists. The junior point guard has posted 16 assists to just one turnover in the last two games-both UH wins.

Roberto Nelson finished with 24 points for the Beavers (7-4).

It was an up-and-down pace in the first half and UH built a 10-point lead late on the strength of 5-of-6 shooting from behind the arc. The Beavers, however, scored eight unanswered points to pull within 40-38 at the break.

The game was tied 42-42 early in the second half before UH went on a game-changing surge. The Rainbow Warriors out-scored the Beavers 23-4 over the next 10 minutes to take a 65-46 lead. Isaac Fotu scored 10 of this team-high 17 points during the decisive stretch as UH looked to coast to victory.

Oregon State, however, wouldn't fold. Helped by some shaky free throw shooting by UH, the Beavers closed to within seven points with two minutes remaining. UH though sealed the deal with a minute left after Shamburger hit a three-pointer to push the lead back to double-digits.

Shamburger added nine points, six rebounds and two steals for the 'Bows, who also got 16 points from Garrett Nevels and 15 first-half points from Christian Standhardinger

The Rainbow Warriors will be back in action on Monday, Dec. 30 when they host Norfolk State in non-conference action. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
