KAILUA-KONA, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A large northwest swell will keep hazardous surf through Saturday for the Hawaiian Islands.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service say that the swell has more of a westerly component than normal, so west facing shores of the Big Island are seeing much larger than normal surf.

Those large waves have triggered a High Surf Warning for west facing shores of the Big Island until 6 p.m. Saturday.

Surf will be around 12 to 18 feet today diminishing to 6 to 12 feet tonight and Sunday..

In Kailua-Kona a huge wave slammed against the side of 'Java on the Rock' shoreline restaurant, we are told that no one was hurt and the restaurant was not damaged.

Meanwhile, the Department of Land and Natural Resources closed three west Hawaii state parks due to high surf.

According to Hawaii County Ocean Safety this morning there were 10 to 15 foot waves breaking in Hapuna Bay, and washing all the way up to the vegetation line of the beach area.

Officials closed Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area and parking lot area, including the Waialea section.  The cabins and cabin area at Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area remain open.

At Kekaha Kai State Park, the Maniniowali (Kua Bay) section is closed, due to high surf.

Also Lapakahi State Historical Park is closed due to waves breaking over the coastal trail area.

A High Surf Advisory is also in effect for north and west facing shores of Kauai, Niihau, Oahu and Molokai and north facing shores of Maui and for west facing shores of Lanai and Kahoolawe.

The High Surf Advisory is in effect until 6 p.m.
