A strong storm system is expected to move through East Texas over one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, and looks like it could leave some damage in its path.
A cold front will approach East Texas during the day Friday, and stall out overnight. This front in place will help focus the strongest convection for thunderstorm development. Along with this surface front, a strong upper level trough will help develop a new area of low pressure over the Dallas/Fort Worth area. This area of low pressure will intensify storm development.
While we are expecting some rain Friday and maybe even a few rumbles of thunder Friday evening, the big show comes as we head overnight. That's when the strongest storms will begin to move into East Texas. Precisioncast show the strongest storms beginning to move into East Texas around 5am Saturday. With these storms we can expect to see strong damaging winds in excess of 60mph, maybe even higher. There is also the threat for an isolated tornado or two, but that threat is fairly small. These storms are expected to linger through the morning hours Saturday and even into the early parts of Saturday afternoon, but by about 3pm the storms should be out of East Texas and to our east.
The storm prediction center has issued a slight risk of severe weather that includes all of East Texas, which starts early Saturday and lingers through the afternoon hours. The greatest threat for severe weather will be along and just south of where the front stalls. Right now that appears to be across the I-20 corridor. As mentioned previously, the biggest threat for East Texans will be strong damaging winds, but localized flooding and hail is also possible, as well as an isolated tornado or two.
