MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

Police have identified the 81-year-old man who died on a plane to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Thursday.

Mesa police said Richard L. Nootz had a medical emergency and died on Allegiant Flight 115, an A319 aircraft, from Grand Isle, NE, according to Allegiant spokesman Justin Ralenkotter.

Ralenkotter said as the flight approached Mesa, the flight crew declared a medical emergency, and had paramedics standing by when the aircraft pulled into the gate at 12:12 p.m. local time. The paramedics boarded the plane where the passenger was pronounced dead.

The aircraft was delayed approximately an hour and a half for the medical examiner to release the aircraft back into operation, Ralenkotter said.

At 1:45 p.m., passengers boarded the aircraft and took off for St. Cloud, MN, at 2:26 p.m., according to Ralenkotter.

The medical examiner is working to determine the cause of death.
