President of the Board of Mediation Center of the Pacific Jerry Clay explains why he prefers mediation over litigation

Posted: Updated:
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Jerry Clay, President of the Board of Mediation Center of the Pacific, says that mediation is a far better option than litigation. It allows relationships which have become emotionally charged because of a dispute, to work through problems and arrive at a compromise solution, far sooner and at lower cost than litigation. It also helps build a healthier, happier community.

Mediation Center of the Pacific (the Mediation Center) was founded in 1979 to provide Hawaii's people with peaceful approaches to preventing and resolving conflict of all types.

This includes, but is not limited to, domestic matters (i.e. divorce, custody, visitation); family issues (guardianship, elder living arrangements, caregiver issues); condominium disputes; civil rights complaints; special education issues; employee disputes; landlord/tenant disputes; consumer/merchant complaints; residential foreclosures; and neighbor to neighbor conflicts.

Provides Affordable Mediation Services: NO Cost to Low Cost/Underserved Populations

The Mediation Center is Oahu's only provider of low cost dispute resolution services.  It offers affordable mediation services to everyone and no-cost mediation services to low income and underserved populations.

Develops Processes that Accommodate Diversity

Helps participants address a broad array of issues and meet the unique needs of Hawaii's culturally diverse populations. Parties in conflict are assisted in resolving their immediate dispute, as well as in improving communication and strengthening their relationships for the future.

Serves More That 6000 Directly, Thousands More Indirectly

more than 6,000 people directly benefit from the Mediation Center's services annually.  Thousands more benefit indirectly.  When disputes are resolved, family members, friends and co-workers of the involved parties also benefit as peace is restored in their homes and workplaces.

Collaborates with other Mediators, Judiciary, DOE, DCCA

The Mediation Center collaborates with the four other community mediation centers statewide on a contract with the Hawaii State Judiciary.  The funds from the contract cover approximately 30% of the  mediation services for court referred cases.  The Mediation Center also maintains a Statewide contract with the Department of Education to provide special education mediation services and a contract with the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs to provide mediation services for condominium disputes on Oahu.
