TCC football staying in 1-AAAAA

The Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets football team will continue to play in Region 1-AAAAA.

Head coach Bill Shaver says the GHSA has denied the school's request to move the football team down to AAAA with the rest of the Yellow Jacket athletic teams.

The school appealed to the reclassification committee during a Tuesday morning meeting in Thomaston.

Shaver says the school was told each of the other schools in Region 1-AAAA wrote letters of opposition to GHSA, arguing TCC had a competitive edge with the school's larger population.

The school will appeal again as the committee is scheduled to meet again on January 7, but Shaver says it doesn't appear anything will come of it.

He says he has already begun putting together the Yellow Jackets 2014 schedule as if they will play in 1-AAAAA.

Lee County was also at the appeals meeting, asking for all sports to be dropped down back to AAAAA.

Athletic director Rob Williams says the Trojans hope to learn their fate at the January 7 meeting.

Lee County was moved up to AAAAAA during the 2014 reclassification, and is the smallest school in the class.
