Captain faces additional shark fin prosecution

HONOLULU (AP) - Legal troubles in Hawaii aren't over for a fishing boat captain who was fined $100 by a federal judge for finning sharks.

Honolulu City Prosecutor Keith Kaneshiro says federal authorities didn't inform state officials of plans to bring Matthew Brian Case back to Hawaii.

The 47-year-old Mexico resident admitted in federal court earlier this month that he ordered his crew to remove fins from sharks. He says he planned to sell them to a restaurant to earn extra money for the crew.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Monday state officials cited Case with shark fin possession in the same incident.

Kaneshiro says he learned of Case's guilty plea in federal court by reading about it in the media. He says he intends to prosecute Case if he returns to Honolulu.
