Three titles claimed at final day of Billabong Pipe Masters
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -
Mick Fanning and Kelly Slater had been neck and neck in the ASP World Title standings, but Fanning became the undisputed number one in the final day of the 2013 Billabong Pipe Masters.
Fanning won the title outright after a solid 9.5 ride in the final minute of his heat in the quarterfinals. It's his third career ASP World Championship.
However, there were more honors to be had. Fanning advanced to the semifinals where he faced Haleiwa native John John Florence. Florence cruised to a heat win after posting back-to-back 9.0 rides. Based off of points, Florence claimed the Van's Triple Crown of Surfing title.
It's the second time in three years Florence has won the Triple Crown.
Florence would have a chance to add to his winnings as he faced Slater in the Pipe Masters finals. Florence had a solid 7.5 wave in the final seconds, but it wasn't enough to overcome Slater's two rides earlier in the heat.
For the seventh time, Slater carved his way to a Billabong Pipe Masters title.
The event officially ends the ASP World Tour season.
