Critics prepare to oppose Hanalei Bay development

HONOLULU (AP) - Residents and community organizations are preparing to protest the proposed construction of luxury homes and a hotel in hills above Kauai's Hanalei Bay.

Critics tell the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that the homes will ruin the view of a ridgeline north of the Hanalei River.

Ohana Hanalei LLC wants to build a resort on a 65.5 acres north of the river.

The Hanalei Plantation Resort's environmental impact statement preparation notice was released Sunday by the Office of the Environmental Quality Control. A draft environmental statement is proposed for release next spring.

Ohana Hanalei spokeswoman Michelle Swartman says the design will protect homeowners and the view.

Carl Imparato of the Hanalei Bay Coalition says Ohana Hanalei could design a development that doesn't destroy the view plane.
