Kendamas banned at Campbell High School

EWA BEACH, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Kendamas may be the ‘it' toy of the holiday season, but you won't find any on the campus of James Campbell High School in Ewa Beach.

The school has banned the popular toy because of gambling. The school cited the reason as a violation of Chapter 19 of the student handbook.

While the principal declined an interview request, sources tell Hawaii News Now that the gambling was conducted similar to the game of HORSE in basketball, only using the word KENDAMA. In the game, each missed attempt results in a letter being assessed to a given individual. When a person accrues the seven letters to spell kendama, they lose.

Wagers included money and the toys themselves, which can cost over $100 retail. Sources tell Hawaii News Now the gambling was rampant on campus, and was the cause of several fights.

Campbell, not the only school in Ewa Beach to ban the toy, Ilima Intermediate School has done the same as well.
