(HawaiiNewsNow) - As the race for the U.S. Senate seat heats up in Hawaii, actor George Takei -- best known for his role as Hikaru Sulu in the original "Star Trek" series -- announced his support Monday for U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa.
The 76-year-old said he believes Hanabusa is a tireless champion for equality.
As a proponent of gay rights and Japanese-American relations, Takei was apparently a friend of the late U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye who wanted Hanabusa to fill his seat after he passed away last year. But Gov. Neil Abercrombie appointed U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz who is running against Hanabusa in 2014.
The elections will take place in November 2014.
