Computer skills earn Oahu school $10K donation

Posted: Updated:

HONOLULU (AP) - A central Oahu elementary school's commitment to computer programming skills is paying off.

Hale Kula Elementary at Schofield Barracks is the only school in the state that will receive a $10,000 donation from the nonprofit Code.org. The national organization is behind a global event known as "Hour of Code," which is designed to boost public awareness about the industry of computer programming and coding.

The state Department of Education notes that coding has been identified as a desirable 21st century job skill.

All of Hale Kula's students and teachers have signed up to learn to code.

The check will be presented at the school's "Hour of Code" event on Friday.
