Family suffers second setback since legendary surfer's death

(HawaiiNewsNow) - The wife of legendary surfer Montgomery "Buttons" Kaluhiokalani is the victim of a home burglary that happened on Saturday, a family friend said.

"I just think there's people out there that are desperate and they're taking advantage of Hiriata knowing that Button's ain't around anymore," longtime friend Mark Gabriel said.

Gabriel said burglars stole several items from Hiriata Hart's home including jewelry, credit cards, cash and electronics.

She filed a police report following the incident and said she hopes the items will be returned.

This is the second burglary following the surf icon's death on Nov. 2. The first one happened at Buttons' sister's home the day of his memorial service in Waikiki on Nov. 29. Electronics, clothes, school books and makeup were among the items stolen then. But the thief seemed to target jewelry like family heirlooms.
