Chepkwony and Kiros take top honors at Honolulu Marathon

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Thousands gathered on Ala Moana Blvd. for the 5 a.m. start of the 2013 Honolulu Marathon. 

The 26.2 mile course took participants into downtown Honolulu then out east to Hawaii Kai and finally returning back to Kapiolani Park. 

28-year old Gilbert Chepkwony of Kenya crossed the finish line first with a time of two hours, 18 minutes and 47 seconds.

His lifetime best was at the 2012 Daegu Marathon in South Korea. Chepkwony crossed the finish line in 2012 at two hours, eight minutes and 16 seconds.

Ehitu Kiros of Ethiopia won the women's division with a time of two hours, 36 minutes and two seconds. 

There were 30,568 total participants registered for this year's event. The total is down slightly from 31,083 last year.
