KAHULUI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Maui police are investigating two attempts to burn buildings at Maui High School Friday morning.
The first occurred shortly after 5:30 a.m. Firefighters arrived to find evidence of an attempted arson at Building L on campus. Crews reported seeing a 55 gallon drum tipped on its side, with approximately 15 gallons of used motor oil on the ground. The suspects had tried to ignite the barrel with cardboard, but it did not burn, fire officials say. The building did not sustain any damages.
The second incident happened after 7 a.m. at Building Portable 1 on campus. The fire was extinguished before crews arrived. Damage to the structure is estimated at $5,000. Investigators say the fire was caused by incendiary devices.
