Police: Man found dead in apartment fire is suspicious

East River Street, Elyria East River Street, Elyria

Elyria police are investigating after a man's body was discovered inside a burning apartment late Monday night.

Firefighters were called to the four-unit apartment building on East River Street around 11:15 p.m.

The fire was contained to the unit where the 62-year-old man's body was discovered in the bathroom. Captain Costantino tells 19 Action News they are treating the death as suspicious.

A neighbor tells 19 Action News she heard an explosion. She also said that the man rarely came out of his second floor apartment, but when he did, he was cordial.

Reporter Paul Orlousky was told that there was a lot of traffic in and out of the building at all hours, which is fueling more speculation.

"You know, so much stuff goes in and out of there, I don't even know," said neighbor Patricia Bunner. "I don't know what goes on over there a lot of people go over there either upstairs or downstairs."

An investigation is currently being conducted by the Elyria Police Dept., Elyria Fire Dept. and the Lorain County Coroner's Office. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of death.

The man's identity will not be released at this time, pending notification of family.
