KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) - A driver killed in a Big Island crash has been identified as a 31-year-old Keaau man.
Hawaii County police say Troy K. Pattioay died Friday morning on a steep slope of the Daniel K. Inouye Highway in South Kohala.
A passenger, 26-year-old David Karratti of Keaau, was injured and flown to Queen's Medical Center on Oahu.
West Hawaii Today reports Pattioay just before 11:30 a.m. was driving a utility tractor-trailer and pulling an empty lowboy trailer.
Police suspect he may have lost his brakes on the steep grade.
The rig crossed the centerline and veered off the highway near Mile Marker 51.
The truck landed upside-down 50 feet up an embankment.
Police say Pattioay was ejected from the truck.
