Honolulu pastor among first to legally wed in Hawaii

HONOLULU (AP) - The pastor of the First Unitarian Church of Honolulu and his fiance will be among the first gay couples to wed when gay marriage becomes legal in Hawaii on Monday.

The Rev. Jonipher Kupono Kwong is set to exchange vows with Chris Nelson moments after the clock strikes midnight tonight. Gov. Neil Abercrombie is expected to attend the ceremony.

The couple told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser (http://bit.ly/19cDIgr ) they had planned a wedding next year in Southern California, where Nelson resides, but decided to move the date up to celebrate the passage of the law in Hawaii.

Kwong is a gay rights activist who fought for the passage of Hawaii's civil union laws last year. He and Nelson have been together for 15 years.
