Kauai beaches closed due to hazardous ocean conditions

LIHUE, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Kauai County officials report dangerous ocean conditions on the North Shore Friday with strong rip currents and waves with 15- to 25-foot faces.

The Ocean Safety Bureau has closed all beaches north of the Hanalei pavilion from Hanalei to Ke'e.

Beachgoers are urged to go to other guarded beaches for swimming and snorkeling including: Kealia; Lydgate; Po'ipu; and Salt Pond.

For up to date information about ocean conditions, please ask a county lifeguard, log onto www.kauaiexplorer.com, or call the Ocean Safety Bureau at 241-4984.

High Surf Advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. this evening for north and west facing shores of Niihau, Kauai and Oahu and north facing shores of Molokai and Maui.

  • Surf: 18 to 22 feet, with occasional higher sets along north facing shores. Surf along West facing Shores will be 12 to 16 feet.

  • Timing: peaking this morning, then slowly subsiding through tonight. This High Surf Advisory may need to be extended into this evening.

  • Impacts: moderate, expect strong breaking waves, significant Shore break, and strong rip currents making swimming dangerous.
