Hawaii visitors, spending drop in October

Posted: Updated:

HONOLULU (AP) - The Hawaii Tourism Authority says the number of visitors coming to the islands fell 1.6 percent in October compared to the same month last year. Travelers also spent 2.6 percent less during their stay.

Tourism authority CEO Mike McCartney said in a statement Wednesday the declines are likely to continue through the rest of this year and into next year.

McCartney says visitors have become more conscientious of their spending as vacationing in Hawaii becomes more expensive.

He says this is causing travelers to shorten their stay.

Spending by visitors from the western U.S. region dropped 7 percent. Spending from eastern region visitors fell 4 percent.

McCartney says the agency will focus on attracting visitors from growing international markets to counter a softening domestic market.
