New tools shine light on Hawaii campaign spending

Posted: Updated:

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) - An enhanced website and app are making it easier for the public to see how money is spent in Hawaii political campaigns.

State Campaign Spending Commission Executive Director Kristin Izumi-Nitao says the site will give voters a good picture of who they're voting for.

West Hawaii Today reported Tuesday new features include expenditures broken down by pie-charts and the ability to see how much a contributor gave to each candidate. The charts and graphs will be updated automatically as candidates file their campaign reports.

Good-government groups are praising the innovations for making public data more accessible.
