HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - University of Hawaii athletics director Ben Jay has been released from Straub Clinic and Hospital Tuesday night and is now resting at home.
Jay went into the emergency room last night due to injuries he suffered while breaking up a scuffle at Sunday's UH-West Virginia women's basketball game.
A CT scan revealed "transverse process fractures" in Jay's lumbar region (L1, L2, and L3) and bleeding around one of his kidneys, according to a University of Hawaii news release.
It's not yet known when he'll return to work.
The fight broke out directly behind the West Virginia bench before the trophy presentation for the Rainbow Wahine Classic. Jay got hurt attempting to diffuse the situation.
Jay released the following statement on Monday.
"We apologize to our fans and our visitors from West Virginia for the unfortunate incident that occurred following our women's basketball game last night. We're pleased that no one was seriously injured and we appreciate those who assisted with keeping it from escalating further. We will speak to the parties involved and take the appropriate action to address this particular situation and help avoid future incidents. Until all facts are gathered, we will have no further comment on this matter."
