Middletown police said they arrested a West Haven man after he attacked and nearly killed a 15-year-old girl on Sunday.
The incident was reported Sunday at about 5:30 p.m. when police were called to Bow Lane for a reported assault.
When officers arrived they said they were met by a 15-year-old girl who had a red, swollen and freckled face, and blood could be seen around her mouth and teeth. They also said she had a red mark around her neck and appeared as though someone tied something around it.
"You could just tell her posture and the way she was sitting in the chair that something was more wrong than just being beaten up," said Sal Fazzino, who helped the victim. "She was bruised all over the face. I never saw a neck look like that before."
The girl identified her attacker as 34-year-old Robert Andrews and said she had known him for about three years and used to babysit his child when they both lived in West Haven.
She said she called him on Saturday and asked for a ride from a group home she was staying at in Manchester so she could be home for her birthday.
Andrews picked her up at about 3 p.m. from a convenience store in Manchester and he then drove her to Middletown and to Riverview Hospital, telling her that's where he was when he was younger. At that point, police said, he drove her to a tree farm near the hospital and he asked her to have sex with him.
She told police she told him "no" and all she remembers after that is getting out of the vehicle, speaking with him a last time and walking away.
That's when he grabbed her and put her in a headlock so she couldn't breathe and she passed out, according to police.
She said when she passed out it was still daylight, and when she woke up in the woods with her pants around her ankles, it was dark. She said at first she couldn't move and slowly began to move more and more.
Her condition caused her to be scratched by branches as she was making her way out of the woods, and then she made her way down Silver Mine Road, got to 409 Bow Ln. and banged on the first door she saw to ask for help.
"Oh she was definitely beat up. No doubt about it," Fazzino said. "When she came to the door, she had a hood on her head. Her face was all swollen and I didn't know what to expect."
Fazzino said the victim did not know where she was and started crying.
She was brought to a local hospital and doctors said the freckles that police saw on her face were actually a condition called petechiae, and they said it was one of the worst cases they've ever seen.
They told police they were surprised she even survived the attack.
Andrews, who court documents indicated works for the United States Coast Guard, was detained by police in West Haven. He was brought back to Middletown, where he was interviewed.
Police said Andrews first denied being in Middletown. He then told investigators "he did choke her during sex. But that it was consensual and nothing was against her will."
"The victim never passed out or lost consciousness," Andrews told police, according to court documents. "Everything was fine when he left her there."
Andrews was eventually arrested and charged with assault, aggravated sexual assault, strangulation, risk of injury to a minor and reckless endangerment.
The group home that the victim left is not operated by the Department of Children and Families, but DCF uses them at times. The name and location of group home is not being released.
Andrews was arraigned at Middlesex Superior Court on Monday. His case was continued to Dec. 13. Andrews is being held on $250,000 bond.
