Video of Memphis mother, kids evading police goes viral

(WMC-TV) - What started as a traffic stop for speeding in New Mexico escalated into a dangerous situation for a Memphis mother, her children, and police.

New Mexico police say they pulled Oriana Farrell, 39, over for doing 71 in a 55 mile per hour zone.

As Farrell drove away, that is when things took a turn for the worse...and it was all caught on camera.

About one mile down the road she pulled over again, this time the officer was less than pleased.  He told her to get out of the vehicle.

That is when you see Farrell struggle with police in the video. In the background, you can hear her five kids scream as she scuffled with officer.

Next, Farrell's 14-year-old son got out of the van. He quickly got back in when he was threatened with a taser.

The officer then told Farrell she would be facing evading charges and warned her not to run again.

She said she pulled over and did not run away.  Farrell mentioned that her children were in the car and that hey are on a trip to the Rio Grande.

When the officer tried to arrest Farrell again, her son jumped out of the car and rushed at the police officer.  The officer calls for backup and as soon as it arrived, the family, with some kids as young as 6 years old, took off in the van.  Officers opened fire as it sped away.

Farrell led police on a high speed chase for up to four miles before she surrendered at a hotel. She and her 14-year-old son are both now under arrest.

Action News 5 found that Farrell has ties to the home schooling community in Memphis. New Mexico media outlets report that Farrell was there for an educational trip.
