HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - University of Hawaii athletics director Ben Jay was injured Sunday night after trying to break up a scuffle between fans at the end of the UH-West Virginia women's basketball game

The melee started right after the Mountaineers' 59-56 victory. It's unclear how the brawl started, but Jay says it appeared to be between a West Virginia assistant coach and a fan inside the Stan Sheriff Center.

Jay reportedly attempted to break up the scuffle, which lasted several minutes, and got slightly hurt in the process.

Jay reportedly fell to the floor after getting hit in the back and suffering back spasms.

Paramedics and trainers responded, but fortunately, Jay wasn't seriously injured.

Ben Jay has released the following statement:

"We apologize to our fans and our visitors from West Virginia for the unfortunate incident that occurred following our women's basketball game last night. We're pleased that no one was seriously injured and we appreciate those who assisted with keeping it from escalating further. We will speak to the parties involved and take the appropriate action to address this particular situation and help avoid future incidents. Until all facts are gathered, we will have no further comment on this matter."
