DETROIT, MI (Toledo News Now) -
Former Tigers manager and Perrysburg native Jim Leyland was honored Monday in Detroit.
Comerica Park was silent Monday, but across the street at the Fox Theatre, Leyland was in the spotlight. Fresh off his announcement that he's retiring, Leyland was the center of attention. People wanted to meet him, get his autograph and talk about his successful years with the team.
Bestselling author Mitch Albom wants Leyland to be part of a panel discussion on black and white relations in Detroit.
"I said I'd be glad to do it," Leyland said. "Then after I retired, I guess he added a couple of things, but I'm not looking to be honored or anything. I've had that before. I'm just glad to be here."
Former Michigan football coach Lloyd Carr was at the event for his friend. He said he understand the pressure of leading a beloved team.
"What he's done here in Detroit, you know, he just left an incredible legacy," Carr said of Leyland. "And he has done it the right way, and we're going to miss him. We're going to miss him because he was fun to watch."
Leyland says he will visit his hometown of Perrysburg when he comes back to catch a Tigers game, and he'll stop by a Perrysburg Yellow Jackets baseball game at the field named in his honor at the high school.
"It is a very tremendous honor, but the thing I'm looking forward to is next spring. I'll actually be able to go there and watch a game, and I'm going to do that," he said. "I know Dave Hall, the coach, and I'm going to go sit in the stands like everybody else and have a Coke and watch a high school baseball game at Leyland Family Field."
Coach Dave Hall says his players will be thrilled to have Leyland take in a game.
"That will be great because I just want to sit down with him when he doesn't have to be somewhere and talk baseball and get him into his field," Hall said. "I think we try to play hard like he taught people, and if you're a Perrysburg kid, you want to be like Jim Leyland."
