HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Some big and rough surf is expected to peak Sunday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a High Surf Advisory for the north and east-facing shores of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui, the Big Island and Niihau.
The advisory will be in effect from midnight Saturday night through 6 a.m. Monday.
Forecasters predict 10 to 15 foot surf along north-facing shores, with waves of 6 to 10 feet along east-facing shores.
The short-period north-northeast swell will build overnight and peak on Sunday. Expect strong breaking waves and shorebreaks, along with strong longshore and rip currents that will make swimming difficult and dangerous.
Beachgoers, swimmers and surfers should heed all advice given by Ocean Safety officials and exercise caution. Boaters should expect recreational surfers using harbor channels to get to surfing areas.
