A 51-year-old woman who was found murdered in a dumpster in Waikiki last week died of asphyxia, according to a report from the Honolulu Medical Examiner's office.

A 51-year-old woman who was found murdered in a dumpster in Waikiki last week died of asphyxia, according to a report from the Honolulu Medical Examiner's office.

41-year-old Joseph Kahawai remains in police custody on Friday in connection with the death of Janine Meyer.

Kahawai was taken into police custody earlier in the week as a person of interest in the case after police got a report that he had threatened the victim in a homeless shelter a week before she died.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner classified the death as a homicide, but declined to reveal further details when asked by Hawaii News Now about the asphyxiated conditions that led to her death.
