HPD officer struck by stolen Hummer in Waipahu

WAIPAHU, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 24-year-old man was arrested in Waipahu on Thursday after allegedly hitting a Honolulu police officer with a stolen Hummer and then attempting to flee the scene.

Kainoa Ferreira was arrested on suspicion of robbery and several other crimes nearly an hour after the incident, which began shortly after 7 p.m. near the Times Supermarket in Waipahu.

Sources tell Hawaii News Now that Ferreira attacked another man with a hammer before jumping into the Hummer. As he sped out of the parking lot, he reportedly hit a Honolulu Police Department solo bike officer.

Police say Ferreira ended up crashing his vehicle into a rock wall in a nearby neighborhood a short time later. Ferreira initially fled the scene, according to police, but was later taken into custody.

No other details about the crash have been released.

The police officer was not seriously injured.
