A new invasive threat has been found in Hanalei on Kauai. More than a dozen Bingabing trees are growing across several adjoining properties.

Its scientific name is Macaranga Mappa and can grow to be more than 30 feet tall. The Bingabing tree is well established on the Big Island, but not on Kauai.

It has huge leaves that choke out everything around it.

"What we're trying to do is preserve that diversity and not turning the whole island into a Bingabing forest," said Keren Gundersen, project manager for the Kauai Invasive Species Committee.

County crews plan to chop down the Bingabing trees once they get permission from property owners. They are also asking the public to be on the lookout for other Bingabing trees on the island.
