LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Bail was set Wednesday for a Las Vegas kindergarten teacher accused of kidnapping a missing teenage girl.

A judge in Las Vegas Justice Court set bail for Melvyn Sprowson, 44, at $530,000. Sprowson's appearance was his first court hearing since being arrested on Nov. 1.

Prosecutors actually suggested bail at $56,000 before the judge overruled with a higher amount.

Police said a runaway teen from Henderson was located at Sprowson's apartment.

An arrest report for Sprowson states that the teen met the man online.

The school district said this school year is his first with CCSD. Police said he passed all background checks before he was hired at Wengert Elementary School.

According to the report, police connected Sprowson with the unnamed teen by way of emails and Craigslist information.

Police interviewed Sprowson at Wengert Elementary on Oct. 1. While Sprowson admitted to knowing the 16-year-old via text messages, Craigslist and phone calls, he claimed he had never met her in person. He also claimed to have wired her $150 one time.

When an officer visited Sprowson's Las Vegas apartment, the teen answered the door.

The teen told police she ran away from home because she didn't like her mother's attitude, eventually looking for a roommate on Craigslist. She told police she came across an advertisement posted by Sprowson.

She said the two began exchanging text messages and began a relationship. The teen told police that on Aug. 29, she became fed up living with her mother and texted Sprowson saying she no longer wanted to live with her.

She said Sprowson picked her up from her house without her parents' consent and she had been living with him since.

The teen further said the two developed a dating relationship and shared a bed. The teen was not attending school while living with Sprowson.

Sprowson was booked into Clark County Detention Center on charges of kidnapping, child abuse, contributing to the delinquency of a child and obstruction of justice.
