Local Connection: New Sports Development Initiative

Gov. Neil Abercrombie and Lt. Gov. Shan Tsutsui announced a new sports development initiative last week, and anticipation was high that something exciting might be on the horizon.

However, the announcement was not just short on specifics. It has no specifics at all. As it spoke of vague references to "Expanding sports entertainment and participation opportunities in Hawaii" while bolstering tourism.

The initiative is supposed to "Identify, promote and engage opportunities to establish Hawaii as a premier sports destination for professional, amateur and youth athletics."

But, isn't that something that should always be ongoing?

And where will these professional or amateur teams play? A dilapidated Aloha Stadium? The decrepit Natatorium? Stan Sheriff Center?

If the on-again, off-again dance with the pro bowl is any indication, getting major events to Hawaii on a regular basis has been anything but a slam dunk.

Tsutsui is supposed to head the initiative but we sincerely hope it is not just political posturing as he aspires to higher office.

We believe it would have been nice if the top two state officials had a world-class event or two to announce as proof that the state had been looking at these opportunities all along.
