Local Connection: H-1 Rehab Project

By: Rick Blangiardi

Prepare for the pain.

Over the next year, the state is going to take one of the most heavily used stretches of H-1, between Middle Street and Ward Avenue, and tear it apart.

Some 200,000 cars a day traverse this portion of H-1 and so between Sunday nights and Friday mornings, there will be a massive construction activity along the route.

Already we have seen all the East bound lanes blocked between 9pm and 4am between Likelike Highway and Ward Avenue.

The good news is that after Monday night this week, there will be no full freeway closures for the rest of the year. However, there will be single lane closures in both directions beginning at 9pm with additional land closures at 11pm. All lanes reopen at 4am. When all is said and done, there will be four lanes in each direction and that's a good thing. There's not much more the dot can do with limited right of way.

But two things are clear: You will need to plan your trips ahead of time during the week and you will get frustrated. Get daily updates on Hawaii News Now and detailed mapping updates on our HAWAIINEWSNOW App.
