than three months before the fateful day of November 22nd, the day
that President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas.
It was a very turbulent and
uncertain period in America!
I was just seventeen at the time,
a senior in high school back in Cambridge, MA.
In retrospect, too young in life
to fully understand what I have now regretfully learned and experienced through
the years… specifically, the incredible pain and suffering caused by man's
inhumanity towards his fellow man, fueled by the ignorance and injustice of
The ‘March on Washington' was
impactful and led the way towards the passage of the Civil Rights Act, signed
into law by President Lyndon Johnson' in the east wing of the White House in
1964. But, despite this heroic and courageous legislation which passed nearly
fifty years ago, as President Obama said recently, in the area of civil rights,
we as a nation have travelled far, but we still have a long way to go before
we--in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King--"judge people by the content
of their character, not by the color of their skin".
The hope and promise of a better
tomorrow lies within each of us...we have the power and opportunity to create a
future better than our most recent past!
