Hiker dies on Hanakapi'ai Trail; Police identify victim

LIHUE, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Police have identified the 68-year-old male hiker who died while hiking the Hanakāpī'ai Trail on Friday afternoon as Edward Rishebarger of Spring Branch, TX.

Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 was notified at 4:20 p.m. of the hiker in distress. The hiker was roughly one mile from the Kē'ē Beach trailhead when he began suffering a shortness of breath and eventually fainted.

Bystanders performed CPR on the victim until rescuers arrived on scene and airlifted him to Princeville Airport. Awaiting medics then transported him to Samuel Mahelona Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Foul play is not suspected in Rishebarger's death. According to police, the man had an existing heart condition and is believed to have suffered a heart attack.

Volunteer's with Life's Bridges, a grief counseling service, and representatives from the Kaua'i Visitors Bureau is assisting the victim's family.
