Waianae to be home to $33M early learning complex

WAIANAE, Hawaii (AP) - A planned early learning complex aims to increase preschool opportunities for children on the Waianae Coast.

Groundbreaking was held Thursday on the first phase of the Kamehameha Community Learning Center in Maili. The first phase is a $33-million early learning complex that will include 12 preschool classrooms, creating 185 new preschool seats. Kamehameha Schools officials say that will expand preschool capacity along the coast by 25 percent.

The learning center is an effort between the state and Kamehameha Schools' Ka Pua Initiative. The initiative aims to support education on the Waianae Coast, which according to Kamehameha Schools is home to the largest concentration of Native Hawaiians in the world.

Construction on the site will begin in November. The preschool programs are anticipated to open August 2014.
