Maui police arrest man in fatal scooter crash

HONOLULU (AP) - A 25-year-old motorcycle driver involved in a fatal crash on Maui has been arrested.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the 25-year-old Waihee man was arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide; driving without a valid license, methamphetamine trafficking; promoting dangerous drugs and other offenses.

Maui police say the man Monday afternoon was driving west on Waiehu Beach Road and came up behind a westbound mo-ped driven by 47-year-old Earle Maielua of Wailuku at Linekona Place.

The motorcycle struck the scooter, continued west and hit a parked car.

Maielua died at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet.

The motorcycle driver was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center.
