Native plants for sale on Kauai for Arbor Day

Posted: Updated:

LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) - The state Department of Land and Natural Resources will be selling native plants at the Pua Koke Nursery on Kauai for Hawaii's Arbor Day.

This year the offerings include several native hibiscus species that are rare and endemic to Kauai and the Hawaiian Islands.

The delicate red flowered Kokio ula will be for sale on Friday. It's historically found in dry forests of Nounou and Anahola mountains. The department will also have the state flower Mao hau hele, which is known for its brilliant yellow blossoms.

Department Chairman William Aila says planting a native plant celebrates the forests that are fundamental to Hawaii's way of life. He says forests supply water by absorbing rainfall and moisture from passing clouds.
