Report highlights Hawaii teacher evaluations

HONOLULU (AP) - A national report says a key strength of Hawaii's new teacher evaluation system is being one of only a few states that will tie compensation to evaluation results.

The National Council on Teacher Quality report released Wednesday notes Hawaii is one of five states and the District of Columbia that do so.

Teacher evaluations were implemented this school year after a bitter contract dispute between the state and the union about the issue. The evaluation system is key to reforms that won Hawaii a $75 million federal grant.

Council Vice President Sandi Jacobs says despite Hawaii's struggles toward implementation, the policies now in place look good for building a strong evaluation system. But the report has some recommendations for Hawaii, including making aggregate school-level data about teacher performance publicly available.
