State moves to streamline fishpond restoration

Posted: Updated:

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) - The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources says it's trying to make it easier to restore historic Hawaii fishponds.

The department's Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands is proposing a streamlined, multi-tier permitting process. The most significant changes to fishponds with the use of mechanized equipment would require the most review.

West Hawaii Today reports routine maintenance of existing fishponds done by hand or with hand tools and using existing traditional materials would not regulated.

Department officials say groups looking to restore fishponds need as many as 17 county, state and federal permits. The process can take years and cost $50,000 to $80,000
