Big Isle police to increase patrols for Halloween

Posted: Updated:

HILO, Hawaii (AP) - Police on the Big Island will be increasing driving under the influence checkpoints and roving patrols this week because of Halloween.

The department says that according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly four times as many children ages 5 to 14 are killed while walking during Halloween evening than other times of the year.

Hawaii Police Department Traffic Services Section head Sgt. Robert Pauole is urging motorists to be extra careful in the next few days, when more pedestrians may be out for Halloween festivities.

He says drugs, alcohol or both have been factors in at least 56 percent of the 23 traffic fatalities on the island so far this year.
